Motor Vehicle Accidents > Personal Injury Protection Claims

Personal Injury Protection, also known as PIP coverage, offers coverage for expenses such as medical bills and lost wages regardless of fault. Maryland policies start out with PIP coverage, usually at limits of 2,500 but this number can vary.. If you choose not to have PIP, you have to sign a waiver.

PIP can be a great benefit. For example, if you are at fault but injured, PIP will cover your medical expenses and lost wages up to the limits of your PIP coverage.  The maximum that most companies in Maryland offer is $10,000.  PIP is still very useful, even if you were not at fault because insurance companies often do not immediately take responsibility for accidents.  If you are injured and it was not your fault, you are responsible for the bills until the insurance company tells you that they have accepted responsibility for the accident. This could take weeks or months. With PIP, you are covered and that money does not have to be paid back.
